Dyno Dynamics 450 lowboy

Rolling road

We are very proud of our Dyno Dynamics 4WD rolling road: a 450 lowboy chassis dynamometer housed in its own custom-built cell. Power runs, mapping, dyno days and diagnostics.

Dyno services

Four ways to use the dyno

01

Power runs

Have your vehicle's power accurately measured. With a maximum of 2,400 BHP there is nothing we can't power test. Your vehicle gets three back to back runs measuring power and torque at the wheels and flywheel, AFR (air fuel ratio), RPM and boost if turbo or supercharged.

Graphs can be displayed with:

  • Flywheel BHP
  • Flywheel torque
  • Roadwheel BHP
  • Roadwheel torque
  • Fuel mixture: AFR / lambda
  • RPM
  • Vacuum / boost, metric and imperial
  • Atmospheric and absolute reference
02

Mapping

We use the dyno as part of all our tuning conversions, so you know what you are paying for. See remaps.

03

Club dyno days

In a club, or just want to see which of your friends has the most powerful car? Running at weekends, up to 18 cars can be tested in a day. Read the dyno day criteria, then phone to book an available date.

04

Diagnostics

The dyno is not just for tuning, it is a powerful diagnostic tool. Many faults only appear under load or boost, which makes static diagnostics very difficult. We can connect a large array of diagnostic tools while simulating different road conditions, without leaving the safety of the dyno cell.

About our dyno

So why Dyno Dynamics?

No other chassis dyno matches its reliability, repeatability, steady-state load control and all-out traction control. Combine that with our purpose-built cell and you have one of the best dyno set-ups in the country.

Repeatability

A dyno has to be repeatable. Do ten power runs and, as long as the variables don't change, they need to be within 1 BHP of each other. If you are chasing 5 BHP from an air filter or exhaust and the dyno varies by 5 BHP a run, how do you know the upgrade works? The Dyno Dynamics has the best repeatability of any dyno we have tested.

Traction

The best traction control of any roller-based dyno, so wheel spin is eliminated. Unique square-cut knurled rollers grip better than smooth ones, and are hollow so an emergency stop won't send the car across the room. A heavy-duty traction bar straps to the chassis: the more power you make, the harder it pulls the car in.

Cooling

Two large fans built into the outside wall feed cool air from outside to our main fan. It has proven to keep 600 to 700 BHP cars cool during full mapping sessions, and we have additional fans for rear-engined cars like the MR2 and Lotus Elise.

Dyno day criteria

Club dyno days: what to know

Read through these before you book. Once you have, phone 01754 820341 or send a request and we'll confirm an available date.

Request a dyno day
How many cars can come to a club dyno day?
We need a minimum of 12 cars and can run a maximum of 18 over the course of the day (the maximum can vary depending on transmission type). Dyno days run at weekends, and we liaise with the club organiser only, which saves confusion.
What does each car get on the day?
Three back to back power runs, with the best of the three printed out for you to keep. It can be broken down into graphs such as flywheel BHP over AFR or roadwheel BHP over torque, and you are welcome to sit in the car with the operator so everything can be explained, including possible areas of improvement.
How do we book a date?
Please phone us on 01754 820341 or send a booking request. A deposit is required to secure an available date, and we will explain the terms, including how the balance is collected, when we confirm.
How should I prepare my car?
Make sure it is in a good state of repair and check your levels (oil, water and so on). Lowered cars are not a problem, as we have extra-long ramps. Road-legal tyres only, no slicks, and any vehicle with excessive fluid leaks will not be run.
Do I need to replace any parts for the power test?
No. As long as your vehicle is in a good state of repair, no additional parts such as lambda sensors or air filters need replacing.
Will you diagnose my car on the day if it is not running correctly?
No. A known fault needs to be fixed before a power test. Diagnostics is a separate service we offer.
Do you monitor for detonation?
Not necessary for a standard car. If the power output has been increased, we can attach equipment to monitor for detonation.
Can I alter my electronic boost controller between runs?
Yes, strictly at the dyno operator's discretion.
Can friends come and watch?
Of course. On club days a catering van is booked for food and refreshments, if available at the time of booking.
Do I need a special fuel?
No, although we always recommend Shell V-Power to get the maximum possible power from your engine.
Can the dyno damage my vehicle?
No. Running on the dyno is no different from running on the road. It is actually safer, because we can monitor all the engine parameters from the safety of the dyno cell.
What time should we arrive?
All members should arrive at 8.00am prompt. As we are in a residential area we aim to finish by early afternoon, and please respect the 30MPH limit arriving and leaving.
